Analysis of radionuclide release through EBS of conceptual repository for Lithuanian RBMK spent nuclear fuel disposal – case of canister with initial defect

چکیده
At the Ignalina nuclear power plant (NPP), app. 22 thousands of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) assemblies from the RBMK-1500 type reactor have been accumulated [15]. During the operation of Ignalina NPP, the assemblies of SNF were stored in water pools and in storage containers, located in the interim storage facilities. According to revised Lithuanian Strategy for Management of Radioactive Waste [20] approved by the Lithuanian Government, it is planned to store the assemblies with SNF in the interim storage facilities for about 50–100 years until the decision on its final disposal option is made. There is a broad international consensus that the interim storage of spent nuclear fuel is not acceptable as a sole solution, but it is only a part of integrated and long term solution for management of this type of radioactive waste. As the time-frame for the decrease of the SNF radiotoxicity comprises hundreds of thousand years, its management solution has to be projected far in the future. Disposal in geological formations has been identified as the most proper option available for SNF and other high level waste today. As the technology development for transmutation/partitioning may not be available in the near future, it is necessary to proceed with the research regarding the geological disposal. As a member of the European Union, Lithuania must develop a comprehensive and integrated programme for the investigation and implementation of national Analysis of radionuclide release through EBS of conceptual repository for Lithuanian RBMK spent nuclear fuel disposal – case of canister with initial defect Povilas Poskas, Asta Narkuniene, Dalia Grigaliuniene, Raimondas Kilda

Ultrasonic Investigations on Copper Canister Welds in Preparation for the Storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel in a Deep Repository
Abstract. The Swedish KBS-3 design for the disposal of spent fuel is based on its encapsulation cast iron cylinders that have an outer 30 – 50 mm thick shield of copper and deposition in crystalline rock embedded in bentonite at a depth of about 500 m. The KBS-3 system is based on a multi barrier system where the canister is the primary barrier. The cast iron insert gives the canister the neces...
متن کاملMinimizing the Repository Volume for Spent Nuclear Fuel
When minimizing the size of the spent nuclear fuel repository, two parameters are important: the required total number of canisters and distance between neighbouring canisters (the canister array pitch). If the latter is kept fixed, the Canister Filling Problem arises. On the other hand, if the former is assumed minimal, we come across the Alternative Canister Filling Problem. Both problems are...

The spent fuel assemblies (FAs) of Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant are planed to be transported by TK-13 casks. Each spent fuel transportation cask holds 12 spent FAs and has a thick steel container to provide shielding. The calculations have been performed for FAs with burn ups of 60 MWd/kg and a 3-years cooling period. The ANSYS®10.0 general finite element analysis package was se...
متن کاملConceptual and Numerical Modeling of Radionuclide Transport and Retention in Near-Surface Systems
Scenarios of barrier failure and radionuclide release to the near-surface environment are important to consider within performance and safety assessments of repositories for nuclear waste. A geological repository for spent nuclear fuel is planned at Forsmark, Sweden. Conceptual and numerical reactive transport models were developed in order to assess the retention capacity of the Quaternary til...
متن کاملModal Analysis of Spent Fuel Cask for WWER-1000 Reactors
The Spent Fuel Assemblies (SFAs) of WWER-1000 reactors are planned to be transported by special containers which are supposed to be designed in a manner to stand against vibrations and impacts in order to protect the spent fuel from any possible damage. The vibration opposition of these containers shall be far beyond the critical resonance, because the resonances about the natural frequency of ...
